Throughout the 1,000-year history of Thang Long - Hanoi, folk activities such as Giong Temple, Co Loa Temple and Hai Ba Temple festivals have always been considered national events by Vietnamese feudal dynasties. At the same time, various types of folk art activities ranging from puppetry to Chèo (popular opera)... were inherited and actively developed. Imperial culture was initiated from folk culture and in turn contributed to improving and developing the later. Most of popular folk art activities in the Red River Delta were present in Thang Long - Hanoi. The vast countryside areas (called Kẻ Quê) surrounding urban areas (called Kẻ Chợ) were places to maintain and develop folk culture with unique and special folk-songs. Then from Kẻ Quê, these folk art activities penetrated into Kẻ Chợ to enrich the cultural life of Thang Long - Hanoi. Artists of Thang Long - Hanoi also brought in their own characteristics, resulting in Ca trù (popular folk music), Chầu Văn (spiritual form of music), Xẩm (songs of strolling blind musicians)and Chèo... being presented by artists of Thang Long - Hanoi, which had unique characteristics and identities and became ancient Đoài Chèo Area and Xẩm singing in Hanoi ancient streets...
